T-Time With The President
John Renkema

Greetings from Camp Verde. Hope everyone is having a great summer. Montana and I sure are.

The trip to South Dakota for the International Tour was wonderful. Nine of our club members caravanned to South Dakota where we were met by four other members. Our club was well represented. Hooray for CCMTC.

The first three days we camped at Sheridan Lake, which is beautiful. We explored the country with stops at antique stores and the Mistletoe Ranch (a Christmas store the girls said was fantastic.) Antiquing with Model T'ers is so much fun. Everyone came home with treasures. We all enjoyed the school museum in Hot Springs, S.D. Especially Marilyn and Marti - they made use of the playground.

Then it was on to Rapid City for the International Tour. What an area for touring in a T. It is beautiful, not much traffic, and has interesting tour routes. The first evening took us to Mt. Rushmore for the evening performance, which was inspiring. The lighting of the mountain at dark was really special.

One tour took us to Les Schuchardt's collection of old, old cars. All I can say is "wow"!! Another tour took us to a junk yard. Yes, I said junk yard!! A&A Auto Salvage has a huge museum, where they collect everything imaginable. It was a WOW!!

The cowboy dinner and show at Ft. Hayes was interesting. It was similar to the one in Kanab. The opening and closing banquets were very good.

The car show was well attended and they gave out several awards. The highlight of the week was the "Stynoski Award", which was won by our very own Russ Furstnow and his '13 touring, "Brooke". Congratulations, Russ!!!!!!!

We were pleased to see so many young people involved and driving their cars. International really supports the youth. They held an auction for youth scholarships and raised almost $10,000. They also had several special awards for the youth.

The day tour to Mt. Rushmore, complete with group picture, was fun. We hiked the trail with the ranger, visited the Artist's Studio and the museum. Then we watched the movie, showing how it came to be.

The low of the week was Jim and Doris Martin's accident. They rolled their car and were pinned underneath. They were taken to the Sturgis Hospital. Doris cracked her pelvis and Jim cracked some ribs. They looked pretty rough, but are home and doing fine at this time. Bandit is fine, too. For their effort, they received the Hard Luck Trophy and the Ladies' Choice Award.

For a complete rundown on the tour, tune in to your next issue of the Model T Times.

Be sure to check the calendar for our upcoming tours. We hope to see all of you at Ashurst Lake in September.

The President's Tour will be Nov. 20-21 at Camp Verde. Anyone wanting to ride the Verde Canyon Railroad on the 20th needs to make a reservation. They are asking for 60 days in advance. The phone number is 800-293-7245. There are 2 motels in Camp Verde for those who don't want to camp out.
